在60年代的香港, 火水爐是明火煮食的爐具, 以煤油作燃料. 火水爐使用方便, 很快便取代了燒柴, 炭的傳統爐具, 火水爐以鐵皮製成, 基座有個鐵箱, 注滿火水. 火水由十數條棉線(燈芯)吸引至火水爐的頂部.在生火煮食前, 用家以火柴或打火機點火, 把火水爐頭露出半寸的棉線點燃, 放上水煲即可使用. 火水爐通常是藍色及綠色, 有圓形及方形兩種.
